Scarlet Letter pg. 69

Entry 10

"as I have sought gold in alchemy. There is a sympathy that will make me conscious of him."

Roger Chillingsworth claims to have other senses that can help him find the father of Hester's child. Alchemy, or magic, was considered wrong, dark, and evil in this time. This hints that he is too.

.."Sooner or later, he must needs be mine!"

He's not going to give up until he discovers the mystery.

Entry 9

"I know not Lethe nor Nepenthe, remarked he; "but I have learned many new secrets in the wilderness, and here is one of them,--a recipe that an Indian taught me, in requital of some lessons of my own, that were as old as Paracelsus."

Lethe: a river in Hades. The dead who were about to be reincarnated were supposed to drink of it to forget their past lives.

Nepenthe: a drug thought by the ancient Greeks to banish pain and sorrow and produce forgetfulness.

Paracelsus: a pseudonym. A man who wandered from country to country practicing magic, alchemy, and astrology. Though he occupied the chair of physic and surgery at Basel, he was denounced as a quack. He is sometimes called the father of modern chemistry.

Where is the common ground? Both Lethe and Nepenthe were used to 'forget' or banish sorrow and pain. If you were Paracelsus for instance who was declared evil, he could be compared to something that lived in Hades, or would want to get rid of his suffering by taking nepenthe. They all lead back to evil. Nepenthe could also be considered not only a drug but magical or part of alchemy.

Scarlet Letter pg. 65

Entry 8

'a state of nervous excitement'

Hester Prynne had just seen her husband for the first time in two years, and now he sees her with a baby from another man. She doesn't know what to feel because she's not sure what he'll do or what he's capable of.

'had been in such deep interest to the wearer of the scarlet letter'

The man or the 'stranger' who was asking a townsman about Hester Prynne: her husband.

'His name was announced as Roger Chillingworth'

Roger: refers to skulls and crossbones and renown for sword or spear.
He was pretending to be someone else, and when he walked in Hester became 'still as death' because she couldn't believe it was him.

'I promise you, Mistress Prynne shall here after be more amendable to just authority than you may have found her heretofore.'

Her husband is almost threatening her. He wants to make her more reasonable to find out who the father of her child is.

Entry 7

'would have been more terrible than ever to meet him as she now did, with the hot, mid-day sun burning down upon her face, and lighting up it's shame'

Light can relate or symbolize to a number of things in this context. 'Unadulterated light' which has to do with the purity of light itself and represents what Hester wants to be. 'Golden light' can relate to 'God's light' or 'God's Golden Rule' where it clears things up. The sun can hint at the golden thread of the "A" on Hester's bosom. (gold: brilliant, precious, and beautiful)

Light represents the good and pureness in people. Hester, with her baby on the scaffold had God's light shined down upon her showing her sin. Her husband couldn't have seen her deceitfulness any clearer than he did when she was displayed for everyone else to see as well.

Entry 6

'A writhing horror twisted itself across his features, like a snake gliding swiftly over them'

In the bible a snake makes Adam and Eve break the rules of God. The snake tempted Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge and told her that it would make her more like God and it wouldn't lead to death. She gave in and both Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the apple tree. God cursed Adam and Eve and the serpent. The snake was the deceiver in the Garden of Eden, and symbolizes evil and persuasion. The snake in this text is related to the man, hints that he's evil, and alludes to the bible.
