Roger Chillingsworth claims to have other senses that can help him find the father of Hester's child. Alchemy, or magic, was considered wrong, dark, and evil in this time. This hints that he is too.
.."Sooner or later, he must needs be mine!"
He's not going to give up until he discovers the mystery.
