Scarlet Letter pg. 65

Entry 8

'a state of nervous excitement'

Hester Prynne had just seen her husband for the first time in two years, and now he sees her with a baby from another man. She doesn't know what to feel because she's not sure what he'll do or what he's capable of.

'had been in such deep interest to the wearer of the scarlet letter'

The man or the 'stranger' who was asking a townsman about Hester Prynne: her husband.

'His name was announced as Roger Chillingworth'

Roger: refers to skulls and crossbones and renown for sword or spear.
He was pretending to be someone else, and when he walked in Hester became 'still as death' because she couldn't believe it was him.

'I promise you, Mistress Prynne shall here after be more amendable to just authority than you may have found her heretofore.'

Her husband is almost threatening her. He wants to make her more reasonable to find out who the father of her child is.
